The War Sword is a hand-and-a-half design from the early 14th century. The single-hand Lionheart Sword is typical of the cruciform-hilt style of the crusading knights of Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. The wheel pommel and macassar ebony grip balance the carbon steel blade perfectly. The sword is classically styled, with a cruciform hilt, wheel pommel and a ridged-and-fullered blade that is both stiff and surprisingly light. With a weight of less than 2 ½ lbs., the sword can be wielded forcefully without undue wear and tear on the arm.

This well balanced sword may be wielded single-handed or hand-and-a-half style and would (and perhaps did!) give an excellent accounting of itself in the field of battle by Edward III of England. The sword is based on an original, now in a British musuem, used by one of England’s finest knights, Sir William Marshall, who served the crown faithfully under Henry II, Richard the Lionheart and Jack Lackland.  This is truly a sword for the connoisseur. This Hanwei single-hand Marshall Sword sets new standards of quality and authenticity in broadsword construction.

Hand-and-a-Half Sword, these versions of a 16th century piece are a longtime favorite. Wielded with untamed ferocity on many a Gaelic battlefield, the massive Lowlander sword vividly illustrates the might of the Scots of old. Though by far the largest sword ever offered by CAS/Hanwei, the Lowlander is beautifully proportioned and balanced. The typically Scottish quatrefoils in the ring guards attest to the heritage of this imposing piece.

The River Witham Sword was dredged from the River Witham near the town of Lincoln during work carried out in 1788. The strong and fearless Swiss and Germans originally carried these early weapons, although bastard swords soon became popular in other regions such as the British Isles and Europe. The Dirk is patterned after an early model (circa 1700) and is similar in form to earlier ballock knives.

The swords of medieval Europe evolved from a tradition of straight, double-edged swords which began with bronze swords as early as 1,500 BC. At the opening of the Middle Ages these swords tended to have blades just under 36 inches long with a grip designed to accommodate a single hand; the other hand being concerned with the grip of a shield.

During the Crusades of the 12th to (13th) century, the cruciform type of arming sword remained essentially stable, with variations mainly concerning the shape of the pommel. These swords were designed as cutting weapons, although effective points were becoming common to counter improvements in armour.
